While a stud wall could be built in place similar to furring strips the traditional method is to build it on the floor and erect it against the wall. When installing wall furring a mason or construction worker will lay the channels perpendicular to the wall studs.

The two main types of furring strips are made of wood and metal. They will install the wall furring vertically if the surface is already present. Furring strips have several uses. Once the furring strips are in place you can install the drywall the same way you would on any stud wall.
